What Makes Volusion So Great?

Posted on

When Kevin Sproles, a website designer, realized his clients were looking for an easy way to sell goods online, he got the idea to start Volusion. Since 1999, Volusion has grown into a popular e-commerce platform. It is actually designed for use by both small and big businesses, and it boasts all of the features merchants would expect to find in an e-commerce platform. Let’s take a deeper look at what all Volusion has to offer.

Volusion Usability

Though not as user-friendly as other e-commerce platforms, Volusion has its share of perks. In terms of being user-friendly, the platform allows users to view product statistics, like top products and recent sales. On the dashboard, and it even offers a management system devoted to allowing you to communicate with and nurture new and existing customer relationships. With this feature, you can view a customer’s order history and keep an eye on support queries.

What Features Are Included with Volusion?

Volusion offers many convenient features to merchants and customers alike. Some of those features include the following:

  • Volusion allows merchants to accept many different types of currency.
  • Enjoy the ability to list an unlimited number of products, in unlimited variations.
  • Option to adopt a specific email address with your domain name for company use.
  • Access to convenient tax calculation tools.
  • Volusion is mobile-friendly, so you can access your online store from any mobile device.
  • Thanks to Volusion’s Returned Merchandise Authorization (RMA) feature, handling customer returns is a breeze.
  • Make marketing your business easy with Volusion’s email marketing features.

  • Ratings and reviews are always accepted.
  • Checking out is a breeze with Volusion’s one-page checkout option.
  • Volusion’s abandoned cart alert feature makes it easy to remind customers of pending transactions.
  • Volusion allows sharing on social media pages.
  • Access to coupon codes and daily deals.

About Volusion’s Web Design

Just recently, Volusion decided to upgrade the selection of themes. Now all 13 themes are mobile-responsive. In addition to the 13 free themes, Volusion also offers a number of other themes for an added cost of $180. As an added bonus, many of the themes are customizable to reflect your business brand thanks to the template editor built into every theme. This editing tool makes it easy to edit CSS and HTML stylesheets until you achieve the desired look for your store.

However, it should be noted that Volusion is more geared toward experienced coders, as the Easy Editor often used by the less tech-savvy among us is severely lacking in options and capabilities. For example, with the Easy Editor, you’re limited to editing basic things like fonts, colors, buttons, and images. It’s essentially useful only for small edits.

Volusion Add-On Options

As with many e-commerce platforms, Volusion offers its own App Store, complete with nearly 86 different add-ons to better customize your online store. Some of the most popular add-ons include:

  • MailChimp and other email marketing tools
  • Slack
  • Online Quickbooks
  • Zapier
  • Xero integration

Volusion’s Pricing Options

Similar to BigCommerce, Volusion offers a free 14-day trial to let you try out the platform and find out if it will be a good fit for your business. Once you make the decision to go ahead with Volusion, you can choose between four different pricing levels, all of which come with their own perks. With your service, you will never have to pay setup costs, and payment is collected monthly. Additionally, if you decide to cancel, you can do so without having to pay a fee. Let’s take a look at the different pricing options.

Mini: At $15/month, this plan comes with no transaction fees, unlimited storage, the ability to post 100 products to your store page, 1 GB bandwidth, access to online support 24/7, a Facebook store, a mobile app, social media marketing tools, and more.

Plus: At $35/month, this plan comes with everything included with the Mini plan, as well as up to 1,000 products, 24/7 phone support, reports on abandoned carts, import/export options, and more.

Pro: At $75/month, this plan offers everything included in the Plus plan, as well as 10 GB bandwidth, up to 10,000 products, ability to accept phone orders, eBay and Amazon integration, CRM tools, API access, and ability to offer daily deals and customer loyalty options.

Premium: At $135/month, this plan offers everything in the Pro plan. You’ll be upgraded to 35 GB bandwidth, can post unlimited products, and will be assigned an account manager.

Payment Processing Options with Volusion

To make managing your store easy, Volusion offers the ability to integrate with more than 30 different payment gateways, including:

  • Skrill
  • First Data
  • Stripe
  • net
  • PayPal Pro
  • CyberSource
  • Chase Paymentech

In addition to these popular payment gateways, Volusion has its own payment gateway in-house, commonly referred to as Volusion Merchant Services. This gateway is only available to merchants in the United States, and it offers benefits in the form of lower transaction fees than other payment gateways.

Volusion’s Security Protocols

Whenever you conduct business online, you want to make sure that any sensitive information and data are kept the private and secure. That’s why Volusion went ahead and became Payment Card Industry (PCI) Level 1 compliant. Other security features include regular automatic upgrades and daily backups. Unfortunately, Volusion doesn’t offer SSL certificates, so you’ll have to maintain one on your own. They can be purchased for $89/year from Volusion.

Technical and Customer Support with Volusion

With Volusion, three out of the four plans come with an around-the-clock customer and technical support via email, live chat, or phone. However, there are resources available on Volusion’s website to help you figure problems out yourself, including video tutorials and webinars, a Dev wiki, and social media platforms where you can reach out to Volusion via Twitter or Facebook.

The Takeaway

OK, so Volusion isn’t the absolute best in terms of an e-commerce platform. If anything, it manages to offer basic functions and features, and the fact that its security protocols are somewhat lacking is a bit of a letdown. Plain and simple, other platforms offer much more than what Volusion offers; it’s just up to you to decide which one will work best for your business.
